Inside: Two simple paper plate animal crafts ideas (rabbit and chick) that children in kindergarten can make around Spring and Easter. Template available.
I was thinking of a good project for easter and spring that would get the children using scissors without having to cut through long lines, since I noticed most of the 2 and 3-year-olds that I am currently teaching enjoy more doing small snip cuts with the scissors. I thought the “liney” texture that come on most paper plates would be a good guide to help the children do these snip cuts straight, achieving a result that is pleasing to the eye since the little cuts make the bunny and the baby chick look “fluffy” without having to glue the usual feathers or cotton balls.

2. Add colour to your life and your template.
3. Cut out the bunny’s ears and face from your all-coloured template.
4. Here I’d stick the face to the paper plate before the next step so the children can feel as if they are trimming the bunny’s hair.
5. Make snap cuts with scissors all around the paper plate.
6. Stick the bunny ears to your fluffy-looking plate.
That’s it!
Et voilá, it’s a Bunny!

How to Make a Paper Plate Baby Chick Craft
Materials:
- Paper Plate
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- A copy of the printable (download it at the end of this page)
- Anything to add colour (I like these markers)
- Pipe cleaners
Process:
1. Print a copy of the Baby Chick template (download it at the end of this page).
2. Add colour to your template. I personally like to add colour around the black lines. Your children don’t have to be as exact when following the black-line and you get around those white parts that will stand out once you place the cut out piece over a coloured background.
2. Cut out the bird’s eyes + mouth + wings from your all-coloured template.
3. Here I’d stick the face to the paper plate before the next step so the children could feel as if they where trimming the baby chick’s furrage. Ooh la lá!
4. Make snap cuts with scissors all around the paper plate.
5. Stick the eyes and the mouth on the paper plate. BUT WAIT! Before adding any glue, have a little play moving around the eyes, mouth and wings in different parts of the plate to find the one position that feels just right. Doesn’t it feel good?
6. Add wings to the back of the plate using tape or glue stick.
7. Make the chick’s legs using two halves of a pipe cleaner.
The chick is ready to go!

Complement the craft activity with a baby chick dance
Since I am Mexican, I’m one to admit that this craft reminds me lots of a classic performance in kindergarten festivals so below is a video of the song that has played in Mexican preschools for centuries. This dance might as well become part of the curriculum:

Bonus idea! Make a Simple Chick Easter Card and a Cheeky Bunny Easter Card for Kids
Use the chick and bunny templates to make a beautiful and simple easter card. Do the same steps than the tutorial for paper plate chick craft above, but instead of using a paper plate use colored paper folded in half.
Add a nice message to your card to make it extra especial!
